Who We Are

The Iowa City Public Library is a center of community life that connects people of all ages with information, engages them with the world of ideas and with each other, and enriches the community by supporting learning, promoting literacy, and encouraging creativity.

Located in the heart of Iowa City, ICPL is the busiest public library building in Iowa.  Last year, over 1.2 million items were checked out from the library, with an average of 1,500 visitors each day.

What We Do

The Iowa City Public Library provides collections of books, movies, newspapers, magazines, eBooks and eAudiobooks, and music for all ages.  Programs for adults, teens, and children engage members of our community.  ICPL works to connect, engage, and enrich Iowa City.

Volunteers make a remarkable contribution to the Iowa City Public Library. Whether you hope to volunteer weekly, monthly, or occasionally, we will do our best to work with your schedule. Each department has a minimum expected time and commitment of attendance. Teens (age 12 and up) and adults are eligible to participate in ICPL's Volunteer Program. The library's needs vary throughout the year, and there are not always openings available. Library volunteer jobs include:

    • Children's Services: craft preparation, cleaning, program assistance, or general office tasks
    • Community and Access Services: collection inspection, sorting, straightening, cleaning, or special programs
    • Development Office: Book End store, book sorting, special book sales, or data entry
    • Teen Services: straightening, cleaning, tutoring, ideas, programming, outreach, or tours
